My alarm to wake up in the morning is a local radio station. Two days ago, I woke up to the sound of a heated discussion that was happening between the radio host and a few callers. A Muslim woman had called in to talk about her experience at her condominium’s swimming pool. She had gone swimming wearing leggings and a loose shirt, however she was told to leave the pool by the life guard because apparently, swimming in this apparel would cause a “chemical reaction” with the chlorine. She was told she would only be able to swim if she wore the standard bikini.

I was never really a big shopper, but it was something I did from time to time. Before my abaya days, I had to go to the mall at least once every two or three months. Clothes wear out, you need new styles, and there was always this sense that I just “had to” buy something new. After I began wearing abayas, I thought my shopping would go down. No, I do not mean “mummy” as in mother. I mean the real thing – you know, the one all wrapped up in gauze or canvas or whatever it is. The reason why I bring this up is not because I’ve been watching too many horror movies, but because in a strange, mystifying way, mummies and the average Muslim girl wearing hijab have some things in common.
