The Power of Leading by Example

Lately, I’ve noticed a recurring theme in the discussions I hear our Mothers have with one another. The subject has risen from a very sacred and valuable command from our Creator: the command of Hijab. As Allah says in the Qur’an, “O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed…” (Qur’an 33:54)

Change is Inevitable

I was sitting on the balcony one day reading a book, when I saw a flock of crows, and they reminded me of something that happened ages ago, a time when I was only 5. I was at my grandfather’s place with a piece of naan (bread) in my plate. I went to the garden to sit on the swing and enjoy that beautiful spring day. I put the plate with the naan on the table outside, and sat on the swing. I was looking up at the sky, preoccupied with thoughts of how big and beautiful it was, when I was suddenly distracted by something that landed on the table: a crow. The crow took the naan in its beak and flew far, far away.

She sat glued to her seat, while the other students milled around the room, enjoying the brief permission to move around, talking, giggling, and slowly settling into groups. It was English class, and even though she was an amazing writer, she knew she’d end up in the group of “social outcasts,” the loose ends who didn’t have any friends and didn’t really fit in anywhere.

Hijabi Clothes (or the Lack Thereof)

We sisters care about our wardrobes and appearances so even though we wear hijab, we want to look decent, within the boundaries of Islam. I wanted to make up a list of certain pieces which could work for new hijabis and help them to not delay their hijab. (Remember excuses? One of the reasons for not wearing hijab is the infamous ‘I need to go shopping because I don’t have hijabi friendly clothes.’)
