If only we knew the treasures the night can hold: The peace and silence; the calm and tranquility not found during the day. Lights out, family and children asleep, a phone line which might as well be dead. If only we recognized the night as our chance to talk – uninterrupted – with our Lord. If only we understood it as our chance to draw closer to Allah. To know that He descends, subhanahu wa ta’ala, every night in the last third of the night to the nearest heaven, in a way befitting His Might and Majesty.

Steady and unrelenting, my heart beats and I am reminded of Him, subhanahu wa ta’ala. I inhale sharply and raise my head from a web of dreams, woven in my sleep. I have another day, another opportunity to worship, and another chance to remember my Maker. The water, frigid in the morning air, cleanses me and I am ready to stand before my Lord. I bury my face in my hands and thank Allah for blessing me with another day. My thumb traces the horizontal lines of my fingers and my lips motion for words of remembrance.

A third of Ramadan has passed. Ten days are over… only twenty more are left. Were you able to make the most of Ramadan, or did the first third pass you by? How was your worship during the first ten days? Did you stand at night to pray? Did you leap for your salah? Did you manage to give charity, daily, even if it was small? Were you good to your parents, did you give time to your children? Did you consistently pray for the Ummah? Did you find your heart – that feeling of sincerity and devotion – while making du’aa to your Lord? How close did you grow to the Book of Allah?
