It Defines Who I Am

Serine Yamout

When your gaze
lingers over me,
what are you
truly seeing?

I feel your eyes
on me,
you’re forming lies
and opinions,
judging the way
I carry myself
on my feet
above the ground,
and leading yourself
to believe
something superficial.

It’s because
I cover myself.
My style of dress
does not satisfy you.
You feel
‘disturbed’
by my presence.

Let me tell you
this:
My Hijab is
my choice,
amplifying
my faith,
displaying
my devotion,
symbolizing
my decision,
and expressing
my duty
to be modest
in my actions,
to be steadfast
in my beliefs,
to be honored
in my place,
and to be content
with myself.
