Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullah, Umm Ibraheem - you're right. The word hijab as it comes up in ayah 33:53 (which is the ayah referenced in the hadith, according to Fath al-Bari) refers to the barrier specifically mandated for the wives of the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wasallam. I sincerely apologize if this post misled anyone, and I ask Allah to forgive me. I amended with a note to clarify. Jazaki Allahu khayran Umm Ibraheem, I'm so glad you left a comment!

As salaamu 'alaykum sisters,

I read about this a long time ago, and I believe it was discussed briefly in an Islamic course I took. Again, it was awhile back, and my memory may be hazy - but the hijab 'Umar radiyallahu 'anhu was referring to was the screening for the wives of the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, correct? The literal hijaab - the curtain that would seperate them (the Mothers of the Believers) from any man, had they the necessity to speak with them. Not the hijab that is for all Muslim women, yes?

I'm sure you all know that the literal word hijab in the Qur'an refers to the curtain/screen for the Prophet's wives. I believe the hijab that is for all women is referred to as 'khimaar' or 'jelbaab.'

Just trying to clarify here... sorry for the confusion.

Keep up the good work, ladies! :)

Sister Erum, I'm so glad to hear that alhamdulillah! And congratulations on wearing the hijab! May Allah keep you steadfast, and elevate your ranks in this world and the next. Ameen.

Wa iyyakum, maryam, and I have to say that IGIC has benefited a lot from you, too!

Sarah, thanks for commenting! You're right, these narrations are only a small glimpse of his worth, radiya Allahu anhu.

The other day, I came across this video, Umar ibn al-Khattab - Defender of the Faith - it's an excellent lecture, masha'Allah, and I do recommend it to everyone, to learn more about the virtues and place of Umar in Islam.

UmerSultan - we have a plugin called Quotes Collection that allows us to add a widget to the sidebar that randomly changes the quote from a list we have. For more information, visit the plugin site http://srinig.com/wordpress/plugins/quotes-collection/

Beautiful, beautiful narrations mashaAllah.
I've always loved 'Umar (ra) - there's just something about him, mashaAllah, and these narrations just provide a glimpse into his worth.

'May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala place the love of Umar, the love of hijab, and the love of the Messenger salla Allahu alayhi wasallam and his wives in our hearts!'

AMEEN! <3
