A Year Ago Today

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

A year ago today, by the hijri calender, we launched IGIC. It was December 29th, 2008, corresponding to the 1st of Muharram, 1430 AH. Today is December 17, 2009, and (according to some calculations) it corresponds to the 1st of Muharram, 1431 AH.

A year ago today, we were just starting out – we didn’t know where we were heading with the site, what our roles were as volunteers, or what the best posting format was. Today, we have a decent posting schedule, some wonderfully crafted posts, and an amazing team that keeps growing and expanding by the will and blessings of Allah.

A year ago today, we had three posts — the first post ever published, introducing IGIC; a post by Sarah we kept on hand for about a week; and our first ever guest post which we published a few days after the launch, by Heba Alshareef. Today, we have 114 published posts, and 626 site comments. Alhamdulillah.

A year ago today, we were wondering how to raise funds to keep hosting the website. Today (and for a few months now), we’re humbled and grateful to be able to say, we have a very generous brother hosting our website. He helps run a company called HilalSpark, whose logo is now up on our site. Please make du’aa for this brother and his team.

A year ago today, IGIC had a total of 1,354 views in our first month after the launch. Today, we have 3-4 times that many views per month, and the numbers keep growing, walhamdulillah. Yesterday, we had our busiest day of web traffic ever: 1,303 views in just one day. That number is a bit of an anomaly (we normally get 1-2 hundred views per day), but we’re so grateful to Allah for the constant increase and growth of the site.

We picked the 1st of Muharram as a launch date to commemorate the hijri calender, and the hijrah of the Messenger salla Allahu alayhi wasallam to Madinah. Here is a beautiful reminder entitled Reflections at the Onset of the New Hijri Year.

Some 1431 years ago, the Messenger salla Allahu alayhi wasallam left Makkah to trek across the desert, chased by the kuffar who wanted to take his life, with Abu Bakr as-Sideeq as his companion, and Allah on their side. Today, Allah has blessed the efforts of His Messenger salla Allahu alayhi wasallam so that Islam has reached the corners of the earth and entered the hearts of billions of Muslims across time and history. Today, some 1431 years later, we come together online, a group of sisters wanting to support and encourage Allah’s commandment for hijab and hayaa’, seeking to emulate the wives and daughters of the Messenger salla Allahu alayhi wasallam, and the women of the sahabah.

Dear readers, IGIC has been on the web for one whole hijri year. Allahu akbar.

May Allah reward each and every single one of you – those who have been with IGIC from the start, and those who have just joined. Those who have contributed with a post or a comment, those who read silently, those who make du’aa. I ask Alalh to bless our time and our lives, and to make us leaders and examples of righteousness for Muslims everywhere. I ask Allah to continue to bless our project, and to take it above and beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Ameen.

If we have made any mistakes or hurt anyone along the way, we ask Allah to forgive us, and we ask you to forgive us as well. Please let us know how we can improve. Your comments, advice and suggestions are invaluable to us.

If you would like to contribute a story, article or reflection, please get in touch with us, so we can share it with everyone. If you love writing and love hijab, consider joining the team.

For everyone else, we ask you to keep this project and those who contribute to it in your du’aa.

Jazakum Allahu khayran.
