Uniformity vs. Individuality

I was once asked whether I felt the Hijab provided uniformity between all Muslim women, so that individuality was lost.

It was the first time I’d been asked this question. The image that came to mind when I heard the word uniformity was that of a bunch of students dressed in the same colours.

But in no way does uniformity mean that each person’s personality is suppressed behind what they are wearing. I went to an Islamic school and we had to wear uniforms, but that didn’t make me feel like I couldn’t be who I wanted to be or act in a certain way. It’s really the opposite: To me, the Hijab in today’s society is a reflection of that strength of character, where a woman is strong enough to do what is right and stand up for what she believes in. Behind her hijab, each woman has the freedom to be exactly who she wants to be.

So share with me, how would you have replied to this question?
